The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade an item level upgrade can receive, as shown below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades require charges in order to be used. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are constantly updated or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. The higher the level of the gem has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses all over the world, or by finding Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. The boosts to stats will differ depending on the level the jewel is in when it's inserted into weapons, jewelry, or other gear.

The Jeweler can create all tiers of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones which you must attain a certain level to get. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels are able to be swapped with a jewel of the same kind without damaging the original one. You can only replace the gem only once in a piece of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a move will make it more smooth and is typically used for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to them.

In addition to the above upgrades players can also obtain glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely swapped, but they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as aegis and traits, aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to give your character many small, but valuable, benefits. You can find them in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They are also available from vendors as well as through the completion of road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants a small but useful bonus to speed of movement and evasion. After that, they'll be able to purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player can acquire armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be placed in any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to be more effective while inactive, and can also help fill in the void of a solid team or any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

As a general rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace in the near future. Also, consider items with desirable stats that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item upgrader kit has multiple stats you wish to upgrade, as it's usually more beneficial to upgrade one important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one at the start of the game. Mid and top players however they will select a pink or green ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices can affect the hero's ability to manage the map.
